Referral and Funding Information

How to Organise a Filo Day

If you think you, or someone you care about, might benefit from attending a Filo day, this page will guide you through the steps to get started.

01

Making a Referral

Referring to The Filo Project is simple. You can either:

  1. Submit a referral online, or

  2. Call us on 0333 939 8225

At this stage, we’ll ask a few basic questions about you and the person you care for. We’ll also be able to tell you more about local group availability, potential costs, and funding options.

02

Paying for a Filo Day

Navigating social care funding can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to help make it clearer. It’s important to know that, unlike the NHS, adult social care in the UK is not free.

Our home-based group days can be funded in two main ways:

  • Privately – Many clients choose to pay for their care directly. Our team can talk you through the costs and available options.

  • With support from adult social care – If you or the person you care for meets certain eligibility criteria, your local authority may contribute (partially or in full) through a care package or direct payments. These can be used to fund a Filo day.

If you're unsure where to begin, we recommend visiting the Age UK website for up-to-date guidance on paying for care and exploring your options.

And of course, if you have any questions about how funding works with us, just get in touch, we’re always happy to talk things through.

03

Requesting a Needs Assessment from Your Local Council

If you think you might be eligible for support with funding a day at The Filo Project, the first step is to request a care needs assessment from your local council (or a review, if you already have a care plan in place).

Contact the adult social care team at your local authority - usually through an online form or by phone - to request an assessment.

  • There’s no charge for a care needs assessment.

  • You’re entitled to one regardless of your income, savings, or level of need.

  • A friend or carer can make the request on your behalf, with your permission.

If you're a carer yourself, you’re also entitled to a carer's assessment to explore your own support needs.

04

Next Steps

Once we’ve received your referral, a member of our team will be in touch to learn more about your family member’s needs. We’ll match them with a small, friendly host group that suits them, and we’ll keep in regular contact as things progress.

When it’s time to begin, we’ll make sure everything is in place for a smooth and supported start.

If you have any questions along the way, we’re always here to help.
