Dementia Wellbeing Support Service

Dementia is a progressive condition and people’s needs change over time. As everyone’s experience of dementia is different, the advice and support you receive needs to be tailored to your individual circumstances.

But it can be hard to know what you’re entitled to or where to get help and advice. That’s why we have developed our new Dementia Wellbeing Support Service.

This is a paid, additional service available to the whole community (your family member doesn’t need to attend a Filo group), as well as people experiencing memory loss but who do not yet have a dementia diagnosis.

Our Dementia Wellbeing Co-ordinator Mary Garvey has over 20 years’ experience supporting people living with dementia and those who care for them. She helps families access a wide range of support and gives tailored expert advice to improve their quality of life and address their specific challenges.

Mary brings a calm and knowledgeable approach, focusing on what matters most to each individual and their family.

Initially, this service will only be available in Totnes, South Brent, Ashburton, Buckfastleigh and surrounding villages. We hope to expand this service to other areas. In the meantime, you may be eligible for our Filo Family Support Service.

What the service includes

This is an ongoing dementia support service, whereby Mary offers tailored advice and information specific to your family’s needs, which may change over time. The Dementia Wellbeing Support Service includes:

  • Specialist dementia advice and guidance for individuals and carers, including support with challenging situations to help build confidence and resilience.

  • General information about diagnosis and medical support, such as how to seek a diagnosis and understand the right to an annual GP review.

  • Advice on the financial support you may be entitled to, including signposting to Attendance Allowance, Council Tax Relief and other financial entitlements, as well as help and guidance with completing forms.

  • Emotional and social support, including signposting and referrals to The Filo Project and other support services, memory cafés, clubs, personal assistants, counselling services and peer support groups.

  • Support for carers, including signposting to Devon Carers Services and other local carer networks.

  • Guidance on practical living support and entitlements, such as Blue Badge applications, assistive technology, personal assistants, Independent Living Centres and Occupational Therapy services.

  • Support to access services, including accompanying people to initial appointments where appropriate.

How the service works

  1. We’ll have an initial free phone call (approx 15-30 mins) to explain the service, discuss what support is available and outline the cost.

  2. Then we may arrange a face‑to‑face visit to explore your support needs and concerns in more detail. This meeting can involve the person with memory loss or dementia, as well as carers and family members, where appropriate. The charge for this initial meeting is £27 per hour plus VAT.

  3. If helpful, we’ll agree a bespoke follow‑up support plan. This may include:

  • Referrals to health and social care services and other local support organisations.

  • Linking with and introducing personal assistants (PAs).

  • Support with completing forms such as Attendance Allowance, Blue Badges and Council Tax Relief.

  • Researching and providing further information on specific topics.

  • Tailored advice for carers, for example, around communication or changes over time.

  • Keeping in touch on a regular basis (monthly, bi‑monthly or quarterly) by phone or visit.

Cost

The cost of the service is £27 per hour plus VAT. This includes all support, both in-person and over the phone.
