When is the Right Time to Join a Filo Group?

One of the questions we’re often asked is: “When should I refer my family member to The Filo Project?”

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer - every person is different. But what we do know is that joining a Filo group sooner rather than later can make a real difference.

Our service is designed for older people who may be showing early signs of memory loss, confusion, or who are becoming more withdrawn, whether or not they have a formal dementia diagnosis.

For someone with dementia or a mild cognitive impairment, early involvement in a small, supportive group can help them stay connected, feel purposeful, and build meaningful relationships. Over time, this sense of connection and routine can support emotional well-being and help people continue with everyday activities for longer.

“My heartfelt thanks for all you have done for my Mum and to support me over the past couple of years. Without it there’s absolutely no doubt she would not have been able to extend her independent lifestyle for as long as she has, and I know she’s really enjoyed being ‘out with her friends’ whenever she’s been on her days away.” - Step-son of Filo Group Member

We regularly see how joining a Filo group can boost confidence, support independence, and gently slow down the rate of decline. These benefits aren’t just felt by the individual - they can also bring real relief and reassurance to family members and carers. When someone feels more settled and supported, it can ease pressure at home and reduce the risk of reaching a crisis point.

So, if you’ve been thinking about The Filo Project for someone you care about, now might be a good time to start the conversation. If you’d like to learn more or talk through your situation, our team will be happy to help. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch or fill out our online form
