At The Filo Project, many of our employees find that their roles fit flexibly alongside other commitments, whether that’s part-time work, volunteering, family responsibilities, or personal projects. If you’re considering applying but wondering how a role with us might work around your existing life, you’re not alone. In this article, we share how some of our team members successfully balance their work with The Filo Project alongside other roles, helping to give a real sense of what’s possible.

Natalie Knight has been an Area Coordinator at The Filo Project for three years, covering Sedgemoor, West Somerset, Taunton, and Wellington.

“In addition to The Filo Project, I also work providing administration support for a circuit of churches in the South West, run a mum and baby group, and work self-employed in my own cleaning business. I am extremely busy, but that’s how I like it. I decide when, where, and how I carry out all of my work, and all roles are extremely flexible, allowing me to also meet the demands of my family. I prefer to work multiple jobs in different fields, exploring different opportunities and experiences. I feel like my own boss and independent, but also part of a team. Each day is different and varied, and it keeps things enjoyable. The flexible approach to work suits me well, as I need that to balance work and family, and all roles facilitate this approach.”

Merle Weiner has worked for The Filo Project since 2021, hosting three days a week with five different clients each day. She is also the Exeter Client Assessor.

“I run my own Pilates studio, teaching Monday to Saturday, and offer 11 classes a week. Juggling my Filo clients and Pilates classes takes organisation; however, teaching a class after a Filo day helps me to relax and re-align my energy levels. I’m passionate about the health and welfare of people, so working with two different groups comes easily to me.”

Rosie Roberts has been a host since October 2021 in the Tiverton area.

“Before becoming a host, I was a primary school teacher and decided that it was time to ease back on my commitments/teaching contract and find something new that I could easily transfer my skills into. I had also cared for my elderly mum at my home through COVID, and although mum had then gone into a care home, my house was the perfect setup to enable me to host Filo days. I had adapted my house for my mum, so it seemed only natural to open up to other elderly people. I still teach part-time, but thoroughly enjoy my Filo day and doing something different. Working for Filo gives me a bit of weekly consistency/routine, and the days are thoroughly enjoyable. It also fits well with my family life, and my dogs very much appreciate the company for the day too! My current group likes to have a good chat, and I use my teaching skills to ensure everyone in the group feels included. I would certainly recommend anyone who is thinking about doing TFP to give it a whirl. It is a very rewarding and worthwhile job, and I enjoy every Filo day I host.”

Sally Potter has been managing The Filo Project’s host recruitment for almost five years.

“As well as my roles at TFP, I also work as a hypnotherapist and retreat leader from my home near Ivybridge in South Devon. I see my hypnotherapy clients on two days a week, and run retreats 2-3 times a year, usually over a long weekend. I do my work for TFP on two days per week, with the occasional third day when we're busy. I really enjoy the variety in my work. I love the similarities, too - talking to people and finding out what makes them tick is important when we're looking for new hosts. I definitely don't use hypnosis in recruitment interviews (!), but I do use my listening and questioning skills, which are also useful in my role as co-facilitator on the Staff Wellbeing Programme at TFP. I've been working for TFP for 7 years now. I started as an Area Coordinator, and I've been managing host recruitment for almost 5 years, as well as heading up Moving and Handling training, and co-facilitating our brilliant wellbeing programme.”
