Mary Garvey
Dementia Wellbeing Co-ordinator
In November 2025, I joined The Filo Project to set up a new dementia wellbeing service in South Devon, which offers support, advice and practical help to people affected by dementia. I had previously come across The Filo Project during my work in dementia services in Totnes, and I was delighted to have the opportunity to become part of the organisation.
I started my career as a maths teacher, and then moved to international aid projects, so I have had wonderful opportunities to live and work in various countries across Africa and Asia. On return to the UK, I sought work in the field of dementia, having become aware of the poor support that my mother and others affected by dementia receive. I worked with the Alzheimer’s Society for nine years.
I decided to move from London to Devon over eight years ago, after visiting friends in the area for many years. Now, I am very happy to take up the challenge of developing a new Dementia Wellbeing Support service with The Filo Project. In my spare time, I volunteer as the chair of trustees of the Devon Memory Cafe Consortium. I also enjoy long walks with my dog and spending time with friends.
