Being a care partner can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also come with its challenges. The Carers UK State of Caring survey (2023) found that 79% of carers feel stressed or anxious - a reminder that stress is a common experience for many carers.
This Stress Awareness Month, let’s take a moment to recognise stress early and find simple ways to restore balance in everyday life.
The Filo Project’s Filo Family Support Lead, Jane Chamberlain, shares her insight into how stress can quietly build up:
“The Filo Family Support Team talk to many carers who display signs and symptoms of stress, often without realising that this is what they are experiencing. Recognising that we are stressed, pausing to reflect and talking to others can all help in managing this, so that it does not become overwhelming. Often, making small adjustments to routines, leaving unnecessary tasks or taking a few moments to step out of a caring role can make things feel more manageable. Taking time where possible to nurture their own well-being ensures that carers are more able to cope with the demands of their caring role.”
Recognising the Signs of Stress
Carers can often say, "I'm okay", even when they’re juggling a lot. But, stress doesn’t always show up in words - it can be felt in tiredness, tension, or feeling emotionally drained. Recognising these signs early can help you take small steps to protect your well-being and continue providing care.
Practical Ways to Reduce Stress
Stay Connected: Sharing your thoughts with a friend, family member, or support service can help lighten the load. A simple conversation can bring relief and new perspectives.
Say Yes to Support: If someone offers to help, consider accepting. Whether it’s a practical task or just offering company, support can come in many forms. If accepting help from family or friends feels difficult, remember that support is available. Family support services and resources, like Promas' free courses for unpaid carers, offer a safe space to find guidance and reassurance.
Find Time for Yourself: Even a few minutes to sit outside, enjoy a cup of tea, or listen to birdsong can provide a sense of calm. It’s not always easy to find time for yourself, but building in short breaks as part of your routine can make a real difference. Moments of rest can help you feel more refreshed and patient, making caring a little easier day-to-day.
Prioritise Sleep: Exhaustion makes everything feel harder. Rest is essential for your well-being and ability to care for others.
Pause Before Making Decisions: When stress is high, even simple tasks can feel overwhelming. If possible, give yourself space to think before making big decisions.
This Stress Awareness Month, let’s remember that carers deserve support too. If you need a helping hand, there are people ready to listen. You are not alone. At The Filo Project, our Filo days aren’t just a meaningful experience for the person attending, they can also offer carers a much-needed chance to rest, recharge, or take time for themselves. Even a few hours of space can make a big difference to your well-being, helping you to continue in your caring role with renewed energy and perspective.
